TRAVEL DIARY

I TRAVELLED TO...

Japan! An absolute dream of mine and I’m so grateful to be able to see the world with my family. We traveled from Tokyo to the Minamisaku Mountains, Osaka, Kyoto and Gotemba before returning to Tokyo.

BEFORE THIS TRIP I HAVE NEVER...

Been to East Asia

ADVENTURE IS...

Wandering aimlessly in a new place. Instead of driving, or taking public transit, try walking. Get lost! I promise this is always how I find my favourite places.

I'M GRATEFUL I HAD TIME TO...

Drive around the southern prefectures. Though I love the energy of Tokyo, I prefer the smaller cities and countryside. To me, the real beauty of Japan is found in the whisper of bamboo leaves in the wind, or the quiet chatter of locals at a cafe.

SOMETHING I REALLY APPRECIATED ABOUT THE PEOPLE I MET THERE...

There’s a gentility to the way of life I found quite admirable. Nothing feels rushed. Mainly observed through our host Niho’s Tenderness. To experience her culture alongside my mother and sisters through the universal language for girls (playing dress up) is something I’ll never forget.

DID YOUR ADVENTURE SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE IN ANY WAY?

Not so much of a shift as a reminder of the importance of dedicating time for family. I live away from my sisters and really cherish the time we get to spend together.

“The beauty of life in Japan has always been captivating to me, beginning with the Studio Ghibli films I grew up on and as I’ve gotten older, the delicacy of Japanese craftsmanship. I’m so charmed by the food, the dresses, the history, the landscape, the sea.”

BEST THING I ATE...

Udon with hand foraged wild vegetables and amazake at a small restaurant near the train station in Yoshino OR truly any strawberries from any market.

I'M COMING HOME WITH...

More matcha than I can possibly consume, hand crafted antiques, sentimental gifts for family and friends.

SOME MEMORIES OR MOMENTS I WILL TREASURE ARE...

The deer of Nara Park, The cherry tree in Maruyama Park, Kyoto, the tea and cakes Niho served on my birthday.

NEXT STEP?

I’m dying to visit Peru.
